Fall color in the Treasure Valley peaks in the second half of October, and the best of it is close to Greenleaf. It is the season when the valley floor becomes the star of the show.
When Fall Color Peaks Near Greenleaf
Valley-floor color, including the cottonwoods, maples, and street trees around Caldwell and the Snake River Valley, typically peaks in the second half of October, with the foothills running a week or two earlier. By mid-to-late October the lower elevations are at their best, which means the peak leaf season lines up almost perfectly with harvest weekends at the farms around Greenleaf. Plan your drives for the next two to three weeks and you will catch the richest color of the year.
The Sunnyslope Wine Trail
The Sunnyslope Wine Trail loops through more than 20 wineries on winding country roads southwest of Caldwell, about 15 minutes from 20602 Academy Rd. September and October are harvest season here, and the vineyard rows put on their most scenic show of the year as the leaves turn. Tasting rooms stay open through the fall, and the combination of golden vines, orchard views, and warm afternoon light makes it the classic Treasure Valley leaf-peeping drive. Snake River Canyon Scenic Byway
For a longer outing, the Snake River Canyon Scenic Byway along Idaho 45 runs about 53 miles through the Sunnyslope wine country and along the river, roughly a 1.5-hour loop from Greenleaf. Autumn is prime time on the byway, with harvest activities, vineyard views, and mild weather. It is an easy afternoon drive that starts minutes from home and delivers some of the best scenery in southwestern Idaho.
Lake Lowell and the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge
Lake Lowell at the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, about 15 minutes from Greenleaf, is one of the best October spots in the valley for fall color. Cottonwoods and willows ring the lake in gold, and the refuge's walking trails and wildlife viewing make it a favorite for families and photographers. It is also a top spot for migrating waterfowl this time of year, so the color comes with a soundtrack of birds on the water.

Apple Days at Cherry Hill Farms runs October 23-24 at 19125 Apricot Lane in Caldwell, about 10 minutes away, with u-pick apples, fresh-pressed cider, the 8-acre corn maze, and the pumpkin patch.
