Thanksgiving Near Greenleaf: Turkey Dashes and Community Dinners

· By Paul Knighton

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year, and the weeks around it bring a full slate of gatherings near Greenleaf: the Turkey Day 5K in Caldwell on Thanksgiving morning, the Great Thanksgiving Banquet in Nampa the Saturday before, and holiday craft fairs that turn the whole month into gift shopping. Between harvest-season produce on Highway 19 and easy access to Caldwell and Nampa, Greenleaf is a comfortable home base for the entire holiday, with 20602 Academy Rd a short drive from all of it.

Turkey Day 5K: Thanksgiving Morning in Caldwell

The Turkey Day 5K at Memorial Park in Caldwell has grown into one of Canyon County's signature Thanksgiving-morning traditions, with the family-friendly run starting at 9:00 AM on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26. It is an easy, festive way to earn the big meal: walkers welcome, kids welcome, and the course runs through the park just 10 minutes from Greenleaf. Registration and details are on the race's site at turkeyday5kboise.com, which also lists the Boise edition for anyone combining a visit to the city with the holiday.

The Great Thanksgiving Banquet in Nampa

On Saturday, November 21, the Boise Rescue Mission hosts the free Great Thanksgiving Banquet in Nampa at the College Church of the Nazarene from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and distributing holiday food boxes to neighbors in need. The meal is free with advance registration through boiserm.org, and volunteers make it one of the most heartwarming gatherings of the season about 20 minutes from Greenleaf. Families in a position to give back can donate or volunteer through the Mission's site, a meaningful way to start the holiday week.

Gathering the Meal Locally

Thanksgiving shopping near Greenleaf starts close to home. The Greenleaf Farmers Market on Highway 19 keeps its Wednesday 3:00 to 6:00 PM schedule through the fall, so the season's last market days are coming up in late October; follow the market on Facebook for the exact closing date, and grab late-season squash, honey, and baked goods while they last. Cherry Hill Farms in Caldwell runs its fall festival with u-pick apples and fresh-pressed cider through October 31, perfect for a made-from-scratch pie, and Caldwell's grocers, from the long-running local markets to the new Fred Meyer nearing its opening, cover the rest of the list.

Holiday Fairs Before the Big Day

November's first weekend kicks off gift season: the Nampa Craft & Chocolate Affaire returns to the Nampa Civic Center Friday and Saturday, November 6-7, with local artisans, holiday decor, and plenty of chocolate, and the Friends of the Nampa Library hold their annual Christmas book sale and silent auction in early November, a bargain-hunter's favorite. Both are within a 20-minute drive of Greenleaf and make a fine afternoon of crossing names off the list before the table is even set. See our full November events calendar.

A Kitchen Ready for the Big Dinner

When the last guest leaves and the leftovers are wrapped, a home like 20602 Academy Rd makes hosting effortless. The remodeled kitchen pairs granite counters and stainless steel appliances with custom knotty alder soft-close cabinets, and the open feel of the living and dining areas handles a full table comfortably. The tankless water heater keeps dish duty smooth, solar with battery backup holds up through winter evenings, and a walk around the fully fenced yard after dinner is the classic Greenleaf way to close the day. If you are imagining your first Thanksgiving in a home of your own, schedule a tour before the season is in full swing.
