From the calm waters of Lake Lowell to the acclaimed Sunnyslope Wine Trail, the area around 20602 Academy Rd offers something for every weekend and evening. Here is your local guide to the outdoor experiences, wineries, parks, and community spots that make this corner of Canyon County such a special place to call home.

Lake Lowell and Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge

Just 8 miles southeast of Greenleaf, Lake Lowell anchors the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, a 10,000-acre protected area that is a haven for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. The lake itself spans 3,600 acres and offers excellent fishing for bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. A fishing boat ramp at the Caldwell entrance makes it easy to launch, and the shoreline has multiple spots for bank fishing.

The refuge is also a prime destination for birding, with eagles, osprey, herons, pelicans, and a wide variety of waterfowl observed throughout the year. Walking trails wind along the shoreline and through the sagebrush habitat, offering peaceful views of the lake with the Owyhee Mountains rising in the distance. It is a 15-minute drive from 20602 Academy Rd and feels like a world away from the bustle of city life.

Caldwell Greenbelt

The Caldwell Greenbelt is a 3.4-mile paved loop trail along the Boise River that winds through the heart of Caldwell. It is popular for walking, jogging, biking, and birding, and connects several parks and neighborhoods. The trail is well shaded by mature cottonwood trees and offers views of the river and the surrounding farmland. From 20602 Academy Rd, it is about a 10-minute drive to the trailhead. It is an easy after-work escape where you can log a few miles before dinner or enjoy a relaxed Sunday morning stroll.

Sunnyslope Wine Trail

The Sunnyslope Wine Trail is one of Idaho's fastest-growing wine regions, with more than a dozen wineries, tasting rooms, and vineyards scattered along the scenic byway southwest of Caldwell. Several of these are just 15 to 20 minutes from Greenleaf:

  • Huston Vineyards on Chicken Dinner Road offers award-winning estate wines and a rustic tasting room with panoramic views of the Owyhee foothills. Known for their Petit Verdot and Malbec, they are a must-visit for red wine lovers. Rated 4.7 stars by visitors.
  • Fujishin Family Cellars, one of the oldest wineries on the trail, offers a charming outdoor tasting area and approachable wines at great value.
  • Parma Ridge Vineyards produces small-batch wines from estate-grown grapes, with a tasting room perched on a hillside overlooking the valley.
  • HAT Ranch Winery focuses on Rhone-style varietals and offers a relaxed country tasting room experience.

The Sunnyslope Wine Trail hosts harvest events from late August through October, with special tastings, winemaker dinners, and new vintage releases. The autumn colors across the vineyard-draped hillsides are stunning.

TimberStone Golf Course

Golfers will appreciate TimberStone Golf Course at 22500 Aura Vista Way in Caldwell, just under 10 minutes from Greenleaf. This 18-hole public course winds through the Sunnyslope wine country with wide fairways, well-maintained greens, and views of the Owyhee Mountains. It is walkable year-round and offers reasonable rates for both members and non-members. The clubhouse has a full-service bar and grill for post-round refreshments.

Indian Creek Plaza

The heart of downtown Caldwell, Indian Creek Plaza at 120 South Kimball Avenue is a vibrant community gathering space. During the summer and fall, it hosts the Farm to Fork Farmers Market every Tuesday, live music through Tuesdays on the Creek, and major events like the Indian Creek Festival in September. In the winter months, the plaza transforms into a winter wonderland with outdoor ice skating, a million twinkling lights, and holiday activities. It is 11 minutes from 20602 Academy Rd and is the cultural and social hub of Caldwell.
