Greenleaf and Caldwell News: Late October 2026 Update
Late October is the pivot point of the fall calendar near Greenleaf: Caldwell's first Fred Meyer is down to its final stretch before opening, in-person early voting for the November 3 election is underway, Greenleaf city hall is prepping its November council meeting, and the 1.5 million lights of the Winter Wonderland Festival are going up at Indian Creek Plaza. Here is what is happening right now around 20602 Academy Rd, and what it means for anyone thinking about making this small-town corner of the Treasure Valley home.
Fred Meyer Heads Toward Its Late-2026 Opening
Caldwell's first-ever Fred Meyer, about 155,000 square feet at US 20/26 and Middleton Road with roughly 250 jobs, remains on track to open in late January 2027, and the building is now unmistakable on one of the busiest commercial corners near Greenleaf. Days after that update, on October 19, Fred Meyer announced plans for a second Caldwell store: a roughly $100 million store and fuel center anchoring the Karcher Commons development in south Caldwell, expected in 2028. Combined with the new Albertsons announced in August at Karcher Road and Lake Avenue, plus a planned WinCo on Highway 20/26, the grocery and retail picture for Greenleaf families keeps getting better. For residents of 20602 Academy Rd, full-service shopping, fuel, and a pharmacy will be a 10- to 12-minute drive from home, just in time for the holiday season.
Election Countdown: Early Voting Open, Absentee Deadline This Friday
In-person early voting for the November 3 election opened Monday, October 19 at the Canyon County Elections Building, and Friday, October 23 is the deadline to request an absentee ballot. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, with all 45 Canyon County polling locations open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. In a town of roughly 800 people, every ballot genuinely moves the needle on local decisions about growth, infrastructure, and services. Greenleaf City Hall: November Council Meeting and the New Mayor's First Year
Greenleaf's Town Council holds its regular monthly meeting on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM at Greenleaf City Hall, 20523 Whittier Dr, which puts the next meeting in early November, about five minutes from 20602 Academy Rd. Agendas and minutes are posted at greenleaf-idaho.us, with public comment windows open at every meeting. It has been nearly a year since Ryan Schnuerle was sworn in as Greenleaf's first new mayor in about 22 years, and the town has spent 2026 moving its water facility plan and a fiber agreement with Syringa Networks forward. That is the kind of accessible local government you only get in a town this size, and a big part of why families are drawn to Greenleaf's quiet, connected way of life.
The Winter Wonderland Lights Go Up at Indian Creek Plaza
The first sign of the holiday season is now visible in Caldwell: more than 1.5 million lights are being strung along Indian Creek Plaza for the Winter Wonderland Festival, which opens Friday through Sunday, November 20-22, with free admission, an outdoor ice-skating ribbon, Santa, horse-drawn carriage rides, the city Christmas tree lighting, and a winter market. The full light display stays on from the weekend before Thanksgiving through mid-January 2027, turning the plaza 11 minutes from 20602 Academy Rd into a small-town holiday destination. A Winter-Ready Home for the Shorter Days
As daylight fades and the first hard frosts arrive, the upgrades at 20602 Academy Rd make themselves felt. The solar array with battery backup keeps the house powered through shorter winter days, the tankless water heater delivers hot water on demand, the whole-house filtration system with water softener protects plumbing through the freeze-thaw season, and the 2020 HVAC and 2017 roof handle the coldest Treasure Valley nights. Indoors, the fully remodeled kitchen and vaulted primary suite keep things comfortable, while the fully fenced yard, stone fire pit, and covered patio are ready for crisp-evening gatherings. It is a home built for exactly the season that is arriving now.
